NBM Boardsmanship Certification (NBM)
The Certified New Board Member is the first level of the NJSBA Board Member Academy certification program. Areas of study are designed to give new members a firm foundation in the initial governance skills needed to carry out their responsibilities. Eligibility is limited to the first two years of board service.

Certified Board Member (CBM)
The Certified Board Member (formerly “Certificated Board Member”) is the second level of the NJSBA Board Member Academy certification program. Areas of study are designed to give members a firm foundation in the essential governance skills needed to carry out their responsibilities.

Master Board Member (MBM)
The Master Board Member, the third level of certification, builds on the CBM. To receive the MBM, members must have earned the CBM and accumulated 20 additional credits (for a cumulative total of 40). Eligibility will not be considered until the board member has achieved the CBM and served for one year at that level.

Certified Board Leader (CBL)
The Board Member Academy’s highest level of individual certification is Certified Board Leader (CBL). To be awarded the CBL, members must earn the MBM and accumulate a total of 60 credits and serve for at least one year in a leadership position at the local, county or state level. Eligibility will not be considered until the board member has received his or her MBM and served for one year at that level.
