Whether you are a new board member looking to bolster your skills or a veteran seeking to help others, the New Jersey School Boards Association offers ways to get involved. One of them is by joining an NJSBA committee.
Whether it be a standing committee or an ad hoc committee formed for a limited term to consider a specific issue or project, you can learn, network and get involved with the NJSBA at a higher level.
Most standing committees have a fixed number of members, and some may have special requirements for membership. Terms of appointments can vary, and vacancies can occur throughout the year.
The leaders of your Association recognize that to be at our best, we need board members with different backgrounds and viewpoints to have a seat at the table, including members from urban, suburban and rural areas from throughout the state.
When selecting who serves on a committee, the Association considers a variety of factors, including an applicant’s area of expertise, availability, ethics and their ability to communicate with others.

While we are fortunate to have so many stellar board members currently serving on our committees, we know there are others who can and want to contribute.
But we need to hear from you.
Make your voice heard by filling out our member volunteer application.
Please note that decisions on who will serve on our respective committees are made at the end of each calendar year for the subsequent year.
Keep Going
While there are limited spots to serve on an NJSBA committee, your involvement does not have to start and end there.
By attending county meetings, you may find that you would rather seek a county leadership position. This would provide you with an opportunity to have an even greater impact on advancing public eudcation through effective governance.
Someday, you may even decide to seek an NJSBA officer position, which I have found to be personally rewarding on so many levels. Seeking an officer position can indeed be a fulfilling way to make a broader impact in the educational community. NJSBA officers often come from leadership positions within county associations. This allows for a strong connection between the state-level association and the county associations.
If you want to express your interest in stepping up your involvement with NJSBA, don’t forget to fill out the member volunteer application.
With warm regards,
Karen Cortellino, M.D.
