In a move that has significance for school districts that serve as polling places in the 10th Congressional District, Gov. Phil Murphy recently issued a writ of election to fill a vacancy in the U.S. House of Representatives as a result of the death of Rep. Donald M. Payne Jr. on April 24, 2024. The 10th Congressional District covers portions of Essex, Hudson and Union counties.
The governor’s decision to issue a writ of election for the unexpired portion of the term ending on Jan. 3, 2025 is required by N.J.S.A. 19:3-27 and N.J.S.A. 19:27-4.
Consistent with N.J.S.A. 19:27-6, the governor’s writ directs that a special primary election will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, with a special general election to be held on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024. The writ also states that nomination petitions for candidates seeking a party nomination shall be filed by 4 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2024. Direct nominations by petition for independent candidates shall be filed no later than the day of the special primary election. The writ of election directs the secretary of state to promptly adopt any guidelines necessary to effectuate the writ.
