Acting New Jersey Commissioner of Education Dr. Angelica Allen-McMillan will speak at Workshop 2021, addressing attendees at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, the last day of the conference.
The Montclair resident, nominated to the top post by Gov. Phil Murphy in October 2020, started her career in the field 25 years ago.
She began as a substitute teacher in Essex County and taught in East Orange Public Schools before she launched the Marion P. Thomas Charter School in Newark.
Dr. Allen-McMillan is a proud product of a New Jersey public school education. She also is a passionate educator and an inspirational public speaker.
“I understand and value the importance of strong relationships between people as a path to learning,” she said in a prepared statement, “and I am deeply committed to the well-being of children both inside and outside of the classroom.”
She served as an assistant principal and principal in the South Orange-Maplewood School District, and as an assistant superintendent in both Irvington Public Schools and Newark Public Schools, the state’s largest school system.
Most recently, the acting commissioner served the New Jersey Department of Education as the interim executive county superintendent for Morris County.

Feinsod, New Jersey School Boards Association executive director. “Her dedication to the profession and her decades of experience and leadership on the ground will benefit all members of the education community.”
A parent of three, she also has served on the Montclair Board of Education, where she focused her expertise in the area of special education.
She also volunteered as a PTA executive board member, while her children were in elementary school, coordinating fundraising efforts and promoting parental involvement in all facets of school.
Dr. Allen-McMillan holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University, and she earned a master’s in educational administration, as well as a doctorate in education, leadership, management and policy, from Seton Hall University.
Register for NJSBA’s Workshop 2021 Workshop is New Jersey’s largest professional development training conference for school officials and will be held virtually from Tuesday, Oct. 26 through Thursday, Oct. 28.
The annual event, co-sponsored by the New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA) and the New Jersey Association of School Business Officials (NJASBO), will offer compelling keynote speakers, quality professional training sessions, special events, networking opportunities and an interactive exhibit hall with vendors who cater specifically to school districts.
Sessions will cover digital and distance learning, equity, cybersecurity, cost-savings, school finance, shared services, leadership best practices, school technology, social and emotional learning, sustainability, integrative STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math) and more.
Registration Details NJSBA is offering a special group rate of $900 for up to 25 team members, including school board members, superintendents, school business administrators, IT directors, facilities directors, principals, and other district staff. The individual member rate is $450 per person.
