On Sept. 4, 2024, there was a school shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. While details surrounding the shooting are still developing, the New Jersey School Boards Association released the following statement.

The New Jersey School Boards Association is sending its condolences to Winder, Georgia and the surrounding area after a school shooting.

Karen Cortellino, M.D., NJSBA president; and Dr. Timothy Purnell, executive director of the NJSBA, issued the following joint statement in response to the school shooting at Apalachee High School, which is about an hour outside of Atlanta.

As schools throughout New Jersey reopen for the 2024-2025 school year, we are deeply troubled to hear about the school shooting in Georgia, which according to the latest press reports has resulted in multiple deaths. More have reportedly been injured.

While we’re still waiting to learn details surrounding the shooting, we are once again reminded why  it is so critical for the school community and the community at-large to keep the safety of students, staff and visitors top of mind.

The loss of life in an act of school violence is heartbreaking. On behalf of the members, officers and staff of NJSBA, we extend our sincere condolences to the Georgia school community.
