At its monthly meeting, the New Jersey State Board of Education heard updates and acted on the following items:
- Celebrating Career and Technical Education Month: The State Board passed a resolution in honor of Career and Technical Education Month in New Jersey. The resolution noted that more than 138,852 secondary and postsecondary students in New Jersey pursue a range of career pathways through career and technical education. As part of the celebration, the Burlington County Institute of Technology gave a presentation on the programs that it offers. These programs include criminal justice, transportation, distribution and logistics, allied health and sports medicine, auto collision repair technology, welding and dental occupations. The New Jersey Department of Education also gave a statewide perspective on CTE in New Jersey.
- Updated school ethics regulations: The State Board adopted updated school ethics regulations. The changes include:
- New board members (those appointed or elected to their boards after Feb 1, 2023) will now have 90 days in which to complete their first-year training.
- Advisory opinions: As part of the request for an advisory opinion, the School Ethics Commission will require board members and other school officials to review the commission’s publicly available advisory opinions on its website to determine that the concern raised in the school official’s new request is not addressed by the commission in an existing advisory opinion.
The NJSBA will be providing additional details on these newly updated regulations in future editions of School Board Notes.
