Due to increased interest in a grant opportunity related to climate awareness education that the New Jersey Department of Education announced in a Feb. 15 broadcast, the department has announced a second, identical grant opportunity for districts that were unable to submit a completed application for the original grant.
In a broadcast, the NJDOE announced the additional opportunity to apply for a grant to advance climate awareness education.
Details regarding the grant, including application directions, can be found on the NJDOE’s Office of Grants Management webpage. The application deadline is 4 p.m. April 28, 2023. Districts should submit a completed application in the Electronic Web-Enabled Grant system prior to this deadline.
Note: Districts that submitted a completed application for the original Climate Awareness Education NGO before 4 p.m. on March 17, 2023, are not eligible to apply for the continuation NGO.
The anticipated average award amount for eligible districts is approximately $6,500. An additional 15% in funding will be provided to Schools Development Authority districts, for an anticipated total amount of approximately $7,500. Final awards are subject to the availability of state funds.
Allocations from the grant can be utilized by districts for supports for educators aligned to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Climate Change Education, such as instructional materials related to experiential learning opportunities for students, including establishing “Green Teams” consisting of students and educators to provide leadership on local climate and sustainability initiatives, evaluation strategies, technical assistance and professional development opportunities.
A webinar to support districts with the application process will be held virtually by NJDOE staff on April 21, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. E.T. Please register online to take part in the webinar.
