The New Jersey School Boards Association’s 2024 STEAM Tank Challenge has received 578 team applications this year. This is the second highest total in STEAM Tank history and tops last year’s total by 68 team applications.
STEAM Tank encourages student teams to work collaboratively to identify and develop innovative solutions to issues such as sustainability, climate change and the environment, societal problems, and situations that need resolution in our schools, communities, in our state and globally.
STEAM Tank allows teams to take the challenge in any direction they wish. No matter what they create or what problem they seek to solve, students must learn to consider the impact of environmental and climate change, whether direct or indirect.
This year’s application pool consists of more than 70 districts and 101 schools from 19 counties. Student teams from elementary, middle and high schools submitted videos showcasing their ideas.
The student teams selected by the STEAM Tank application committee will move on to the virtual regional rounds, which will be held from March 1 to March 22, 2024. Teams will be provided with a timeslot during which they will meet in a virtual platform with the judges and have five minutes to pitch their concept. The judges will have 10 minutes for questions and answers.
Guests will be able to attend and support their student teams. The winners of the regional competitions will move onto a finals round in May, and final presentations will be held at Workshop 2024 in October for the top three teams in each division. The Educational Leadership Foundation of New Jersey, a 501(c)(3) of the NJSBA, will provide $15,000 in prize money to support STEAM programs at the winners’ schools.
The NJSBA thanks all the student teams that applied to be part of this year’s STEAM Tank Challenge and congratulates those moving onto regionals.
