The New Jersey School Boards Association, a service organization for the state’s local boards of education, is seeking a legislative advocate to represent the interests of the Association before the state Legislature, the governor’s office, the state’s congressional delegation and all other governmental bodies and agencies on public education matters.

Reporting to the director of governmental relations, main responsibilities of the successful candidate will include but not be limited to:

  • Working with NJSBA leadership and its members to develop policy priorities and an advocacy agenda.
  • Advocating for the policy priorities of the Association.
  • Representing the interests of the Association and its membership on legislation and proposed regulations.
  • Meeting with legislators, staff and executive branch representatives to articulate and explain NJSBA positions on pending legislation.
  • Researching, drafting and delivering testimony for public hearings and committee meetings. Prepare analyses of pending legislation and proposed regulations.
  • Monitoring governmental activities and media coverage. Preparing clear, concise and accurate reports of such activity.
  • Keeping the NJSBA membership informed regarding any actions of the Legislature or executive branch of significance to local boards of education.
  • Performing membership services activities, including responding to member inquiries, and representing the Association publicly in a variety of settings.

The candidate must meet the following requirements: BS/BA degree; minimum of three to five years of work experience advocating before the New Jersey Legislature; in-depth knowledge of the legislative process; excellent interpersonal, oral/written communications and analytical skills. Familiarity with the governance, operations and finances of boards of education preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications.

As needed, must work a flexible schedule that may include some evenings and weekends.
