The New Jersey School Boards Association provides support in the form of resources, training and advocacy to help you tackle the challenges of boardsmanship efficiently and effectively. As the state-designated provider of mandated training, the NJSBA offers its members numerous formats to fulfill their training requirements, including in-person, live virtual, and self-paced online training courses.
Live virtual courses are scheduled in three consecutive live sessions, each lasting approximately two hours. NJSBA staff will present information new board members need to perform their responsibilities effectively. This format allows time for questions and answers. The dates will be announced in the future.
Self-paced online training courses are self-paced, interactive sessions that allow board members to take the course at their convenience. Completion of this course fulfills the School District Accountability Act mandated training requirement. The 2024 course will open soon! Keep an eye on this page for more information.
90-Day Requirement
All new board members must complete their mandated training within 90 days of being sworn into office. This requirement, initiated by the School Ethics Commission, is aimed at ensuring that all board members have up-to-date knowledge and understanding of their roles and responsibilities as they begin their respective terms of office.
New Board Member Orientation Weekend
This on-site intensive, three-day training course teaches new board members how to effectively fulfill their responsibilities while attending large and small group sessions on topics including school law, policy, the School Ethics Act, ways to improve student achievement, school finance, labor relations, the board-superintendent relationship and advocacy.
NJSBA is offering two weekends for new board members to fulfill their training requirement. Both programs will be held at the Crowne Plaza Princeton Conference Center in Plainsboro.
