To best support school districts in revising and rewriting curriculum aligned in a manner that results in a robust and viable instructional resource, the New Jersey State Board of Education recently voted to grant districts an extension in implementing the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards in mathematics only until September 2025, according to an advisory issued by the New Jersey Department of Education.
The deadline to implement the 2023 NJSLS-ELA remains September 2024.
On Oct. 4, 2023, the State Board of Education adopted a resolution that set forth the schedule for school districts to implement the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards in English language arts and mathematics. Under that resolution, school districts were required to implement the 2023 NJSLS for both English language arts and mathematics by September 2024.
On Aug. 7, the State Board of Education voted to revise that schedule, acknowledging the planning and fiscal challenges that school districts have encountered over the past year in their preparations to implement revisions to both content areas simultaneously. Therefore, to best support school districts in revising and rewriting curriculum aligned in a manner that results in a robust and viable instructional resource, it has granted the extension for mathematics only.

- No later than September 2024, districts shall align all K-12 English language arts curricula and instruction to the 2023 NJSLS – ELA.
- No later than September 2025, districts shall align all K-12 mathematics curricula and instruction to the 2023 NJSLS – Mathematics.

The NJDOE appreciates the great strides that many districts have made thus far in aligning curricula and instruction to the revised 2023 mathematics standards to date and encourages districts to proceed with curricula planning. In school year 2024-2025, districts will be compliant with state regulations (N.J.A.C. 6A:8 and 32) if using curricula in mathematics that align to either the 2016 or 2023 NJSLS.
Districts that are ready to implement the 2023 NJSLS – Mathematics in the 2024-2025 school year are strongly encouraged to do so. By school year 2025- 2026, districts will be required to adopt curricula in mathematics aligned with the 2023 NJSLS – Mathematics.
To assist in the transition to the 2023 NJSLS, the NJDOE will continue to provide professional learning opportunities, to collaborate with educators to build a resource toolkit and to support districts as they develop curricula.
