The New Jersey School Boards Association is seeking a legal researcher to support the general counsel by providing essential clerical and research services, including document preparation, review, amicus preparation, research and fact-checking. This role is crucial in planning, organizing and assisting with the daily operation of the general counsel’s office. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the preparation and organization of the Delegate Assembly.
  • Meet with attorneys, staff members and other professionals to discuss assigned cases or projects.
  • Research and draft legal documents, including amicus curiae briefs and requests for proposals.
  • Research and draft legal memoranda for the general counsel.
  • File motions and pleadings according to judicial procedures. 
  • Assist with the review and analysis of policies, Delegate Assembly resolutions and collective negotiations agreements.  
  • Research and analyze statutes, New Jersey state laws and regulations, legal articles, judicial decisions and other legal sources; provide written analysis to the general counsel and legal team. 
  • Prepare requests for proposals in collaboration with the associate director of exhibitions and cooperatives and IT for general counsel review. 
  • Review, analyze and monitor contracts.  
  • Prepare, organize, store, and retrieve case files, which may include exhibits, pleadings and other related items.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Education and Experience: 

  • An associate degree in paralegal studies is preferred.
  • Paralegal certificate preferred. 
  • Amicus experience preferred.  
  • Understanding of legal language, principles, and research methods specific to New Jersey K-12 public school systems, New Jersey Public Schools Contract Laws and related New Jersey Administrative Code. 
  • Experience with RFP process. 
  • Some related experience preferred. 

Must be able to work occasional weekends and have the ability to work from home.
