Most school districts in New Jersey hold school board reorganization in early January. The New Jersey School Boards Association has online resources for school boards navigating this transition.
A copy of the oath of office that school board members must take is available online.
The NJSBA also recently hosted an informative webinar featuring Kathleen Asher, the Association’s director of legal and labor relations, who provided an essential primer on the purpose, process, and best practices for holding reorganization meetings. She notes that reorganization meetings are a critical component of governance, marking the start of a new year for many boards and committees.
Some of the topics she highlights on the webinar, titled “A Primer on Reorganization Meetings for New Jersey Board Members,” include:
- Basic reorganization meeting requirements.
- Swearing-in/oath of office.
- Criminal history background checks.
- Voting on president and vice-president.
- Other matters.
Sheli Dansky; a former NJSBA Board Member of the Year; and Irene LeFebvre, immediate past president of NJSBA, also addressed the topic of selecting a board president in this article.
Board members are reminded that each school board in the state has an NJSBA field service representative. Field service representative assignments and contact information are listed online.
