School Board Notes

Over the past week, both the Senate and General Assembly held voting sessions, and several committees also met and advanced a handful of bills affecting local school districts.

In most cases, a vacancy is filled by a majority vote of the remaining members of the board after the vacancy occurs.

The application to seek reimbursement for providing additional or compensatory special education and related services for students with disabilities who were 21 as of July 1, 2023, is now available on the New Jersey Department of Education’s Homeroom webpage.

Apply to participate in the 2024 STEAM Tank Challenge. The submission deadline is Friday, Jan. 5, 2024.

NJSBA Vice President of County Activities Barry Fitzgerald recently conducted the installation of Somerset County School Boards Association President Ardaman Singh and First Vice President Richard Jannuzzi.

The Bergen County School Boards Association held a meeting Dec. 5 at Hackensack High School.

Joseph Nappi, New Jersey's 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year and a longtime social studies teacher at Monmouth Regional High School, was honored at a recent meeting of the Monmouth County School Boards Association.

The Warren County School Boards Association held a meeting Nov. 29 at the Warren County Technical School in Washington Township.

The Passaic County School Boards Association held a meeting Nov. 30 at Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology in Paterson.

The grant program is designed to incentivize teachers to obtain the necessary qualifications to teach STEM subjects and to incentivize individuals to enter the teaching profession.

Under the law, newly elected board members who do not undergo a criminal history background investigation within the 30-day period could be declared ineligible to serve in office until it is submitted.
