Dr. Nicholas Diaz has joined the New Jersey School Boards Association as its new deputy director. Diaz is the former shared superintendent at Franklin Township School District and Union Township Schools in Hunterdon County.
Before serving in Franklin and Union townships as a shared superintendent, Diaz was superintendent at Frelinghuysen Township School District in Warren County; principal and district technology articulator for Manville School District in Somerset County; and an assistant principal at Somerville schools, also in Somerset County.
Diaz is also an adjunct professor at Centenary University and was recognized in 2017 as a “Superintendent to Watch” by the National School Public Relations Association.
In choosing Diaz for the post, the NJSBA went through an extensive process, holding virtual town hall forums with Association members and staff. The Association also relied on an outside search consultant in seeking and vetting candidates. Diaz’s appointment was formally announced in late June.
“We had a deep pool of talented candidates, but I am delighted to welcome Dr. Diaz as our new deputy director,” said Dr. Timothy Purnell, executive director and CEO of NJSBA. “His impressive range of experience and talent will undoubtedly strengthen our organization and help move us forward.”
“During his meeting with the NJSBA’s board of directors, Diaz clearly articulated his understanding of the mission of the Association and the necessary course of action to meet its strategic goals,” said Karen Cortellino, M.D., president of the Association.
“Joining NJSBA is a tremendous honor, and I am thrilled to be part of an organization that plays such a crucial role in supporting boards of education,” he said. “I am excited to bring my experience and enthusiasm to this position and am passionate about our mission. I look forward to working together to advance public education in New Jersey.”
