Janet Bamford, a longtime member of the New Jersey School Boards Association’s Communications Department who recently announced she’ll be retiring in March, enjoyed one surprise on top of another when she reported to work Friday, Jan. 10.
The first big surprise came when Dr. Timothy Purnell, executive director and CEO of the Association, led her downstairs to the lobby on the pretext of having to tackle some business issues in the conference room.
When she rounded the corner, however, she saw about 30 NJSBA staff members, former staff members, school stakeholders and family members waiting.
They were all there to express their appreciation to the Association’s chief public affairs officer, who has worked for the Association almost 18 years.
While it was no easy chore to fool Bamford, she was visibly surprised.
Attendees thanked Bamford for her dedicated service to the Association as well as her commitment to the children of New Jersey, sharing stories that highlighted her integrity and skills as a communicator.
Purnell had another surprise for Bamford after everyone enjoyed lunch, honoring her with an NJSBA Champion Award, which are reserved for individuals who exemplify outstanding dedication and effort in areas such as teamwork, leadership, innovation and other qualities that help the NJBSA advance its mission to promote the achievement of all students.
Only two other people – Karen Cortellino, M.D., NJSBA president; and Lauren Cuervo, senior director of connection, have received the honor, as reported in School Board Notes.
