Dr. Herbert Peluzzo, supervisor of educational technology of East Brunswick Public Schools, was the latest guest on Education Matters, a talk show hosted by Ray Pinney, chief membership officer at the New Jersey School Boards Association.

The two addressed a host of questions that surround artificial intelligence and what role it should play in education.

“When we talk about generative AI, we are talking about an AI tool that can generate content,”  Peluzzo said. “It could be text, it could be images, it could be audio … it’s AI that can create something.”

He noted that students are coming to their desks with more challenges, and AI is a tool that can help meet the needs of all learners.

For teachers and students, it should be viewed as a potential thought partner and work partner, he said.

For instance, it can refine emails, check an email for tone or structure an agenda for a meeting. It can also help teachers make a lesson more creative or create questions that go along with a lesson, he said.

East Brunswick views AI and technology as something that must have a K-12 vertically articulated vision, Peluzzo said. In elementary school, the district is working with teachers first, having decided it’s not appropriate to simply “open the floodgates” when it comes to students and AI.
