• PS # 28 Christa McAuliffe, Jersey City- Team Compost Coalition – (Middle School Division) – won third place in the STEAM Tank Challenge.

The STEAM Tank Challenge, created by the New Jersey School Boards Association, promotes education in STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math – for New Jersey’s public-school students.

STEAM Tank encourages students to work collaboratively to identify and develop innovative solutions to pressing, real-world issues such as climate change and the environment, societal problems, and situations that need resolution within our schools, communities, state and globally. Students are asked to solve a problem, invent something new, or modify an existing product.

There is great potential for student-created solutions in STEAM Tank to make a real-world impact by entering the marketplace while encouraging students to think creatively and consider the practical implementation and commercialization of their ideas.

The program is designed to inspire, engage and motivate students to help build problem solving skills, collaborate with their peers, connect with expert mentors and promote student achievement. These points allow learning to extend beyond the four walls of the classroom.

The STEAM Tank Challenge is a free program for your district and includes:

  • Access to a comprehensive STEAM Tank Guidebook, a “how-to” guide for STEAM Tank participation.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with other teams, educators and subject matter experts in the STEAM Tank Community.
  • Mentoring sessions with subject matter experts.
  • Opportunity to present in the STEAM Tank Regionals and Finals, and if chosen, receive prize money for your school or district.
  • Earn a STEAM Tank digital badge for your school.

The submission deadline is Monday, Dec. 13, 2024. Do not miss this opportunity!

STEAM Tank Challenge Winners Sparkle at Workshop in Atlantic City

For the STEAM Tank Challenge that just ended, hundreds of teams competed and nine qualified as the top STEAM teams in New Jersey. They pitched innovative and creative solutions to real world problems at the NJSBA Annual Workshop in Atlantic City.

Six teams; three from the elementary division and three from the middle school division, competed for $10,000 in prize money. The top three high school winners were announced in June due to the nature of their schedules and received $5,000 in prize money for their STEM/STEAM programs.

The NJSBA thanks its volunteer STEAM Tank judges, whose efforts support students learning about STEM and STEAM, including career pathways that they can pursue as adults. They were amazed by all of the students’ creativity, determination, courage, care for others, community, and most of all the environment.

The NJSBA also extends its appreciation to ELFNJ for sponsoring awards for the top-winning teams.
